RBG Orchid Show

This year I took part in the 2020 OSRBG art exhibition that took place on the last weekend in February at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario Canada. The show focuses on artwork with orchids as the main subject matter. This year there were 28 artists that took part, with a total of 55 pieces of artwork on display.

I entered my orchid illustration in the show under the category/class of pastels. I was humbled to have received first place in my category. The illustration was done using Derwent Pastel Pencils on Clairefontaine Pastelmat. I had a great time while working on this illustration, the delicacy of a flower lends itself well to pastel pencils. My favorite parts to work on would have to have been the Petals, Dorsal Sepal and Lateral Sepal.

These areas had to appear soft, so it allowed me to use a very light touch with the pencils and gradually build the layers to create that affect. Overall the illustration took me 88.5 hours to complete. Prints of this illustration are available to purchase in my shop.
